The project, coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Gürarslan, aimed at developing environmentally friendly and innovative textile products, has been successfully completed.

As demonstrated in the image above, poplar fibers were transformed into nonwoven fabrics suitable for industrial applications for the first time. These fabrics showcased exceptional thermal insulation properties, proving their suitability for use in winter boots. Additionally, conductive nonwoven surfaces coated with silver nanowires were effectively tested as wearable ECG sensors and heated fabrics.

Furthermore, lightweight nonwoven materials produced entirely from 100% poplar fibers demonstrated promising potential in the medical textile field due to their antibacterial and hydrophobic properties.

This project marks a significant innovation for the textile industry, introducing poplar fibers as a sustainable and eco-friendly raw material, paving the way for versatile applications across different sectors.

We congratulate Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Gürarslan and his team and wish them continued success.

İTÜ Faculty of Textile Technologies and Design

Textile Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) is the first and the single one offering textile engineering education in Istanbul, and also comes first among the top textile engineering schools in Turkey. Its history could be traced back to 1955; the year in which the textile division was established in the body of Mechanical Engineering. The school gained its current name and independent status in 1983. Therefore, it is obvious that the Textile Engineering Department is fairly new compared to the history of İTÜ stretching back to 240 years.
